Abstract
We synthesized a new copper-oxychloride, Ba2CuO2Cl2, from BaCl2, BaO2 and Cu-metal powders under a high pressure of 6 GPa at 1000°C. X-ray powder diffraction and TEM observation indicated that Ba2CuO2Cl2 crystallizes in a tetragonal K2NiF4 structure with lattice parameters of a = 4.1026(3) Å and c = 16.442(1) Å. It was found from iodometric titration and SEM-EDX analysis that the average valence of the Cu ions is +1.8 and 10% chlorine is deficient.
