Abstract

This paper describes a study on a non-contact transverse scan rotating head recording mechanism applying air lubrication technology. Non-contact tape guiding and flexible tape support are obtained by adopting both the pressurized air bearing female guide and self-acting air bearing head rotor. Uniform tape reacting force to head can be achieved over 80% of the tape width and tape vibration can be avoided. A new spherical flying head, which has partial parallel slots and head gap at its rear edge, is presented.
