An investigation on practicability of reflection mode diffraction tomography

Abstract

Reflection mode diffraction tomography is expected to reconstruct a more quantitative and higher resolution image than pulse-echo ultrasonic imaging. It is, however, necessary for its practical use, e.g., in medical applications to consider the influences of the lack of low frequency information, insonifying angle restriction, finite aperture and noise. In this work, these effects are investigated using the reconstruction algorithm which we have proposed combined with the maximum entropy method and a priori information on objects in order to evaluate the practicability of reflection mode diffraction tomography. Results reveal that it is possible to reconstruct quantitative and high resolution images under practical conditions of measurement because the algorithm works as reducing noise and restoring low frequency information.
