Abstract
We review the literature on different experimental techniques used to determine the irreversibility line and the critical current density in high-temperature superconductors. Some of our own recent results pertinent to this subject are presented. In particular, SQUID and a.c. susceptibility measurements performed on a large single crystal and a melt-processed sample are compared.
