Abstract

Main features of crystal structures, oxygen chemistry and superconducting properties of high temperature superconductor Y-Ba-Cu-O are described on the basis of experimental studies by X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, thermal analysis, and electrical and magnetic measurements. Crystallochemical considerations on the peculiar tripled perovskite structure are made in terms of cationic ordering due to ionic size difference, square planar configuration around copper ions and oxygen vacancy arising from limited copper valence.
