Abstract

This paper describes a design method for step-index fibers and graded-index multimode fibers from the transmission characteristics standpoint. The design method can be roughly divided into structural design, determining fiber construction, and transmission line design, determining transmission line configuration in one repeater section. The author examines the structural design theoretically and experimentally, establishing relationships between the structural parameters and the following transmission characteristics: optical loss due to bending and side pressure; splice loss; launching efficiency; optical loss increase due to jacket and baseband frequency response. The results were used to determine the optimal structural parameters minimizing total optical loss. The author also examines the transmission line design, taking into consideration dependency of the transmission characteristics on the transmission distance.
