Distribution measurement of Raman gain characteristics in optical fibres

Abstract

A technique for measuring the longitudinal distribution of the Raman gain characteristics in optical fibres is presented. Laboratory and field measurements were carried out using this technique. These measurements revealed that the Raman gain efficiency distribution could be easily measured for various types of optical fibre and for 1.3 μm zero dispersion single-mode fibre (SMF) cables installed in an optical fibre network.
