Abstract
An Evolutionary Data Base Management System (EDBMS) is described which implements flexible adaptation of data bases to application usage while maintaining effective execution performance. EDBMS provides a complete programming environment with facilities for implementation, management and control of evolutionary change of data base definition. The programming environment includes a structure manipulation language (SML) and a library concept which extends the data dictionary concept to all elements of a data base system. EDBMS extends the life cycle management concept of software engineering to data base system programming.
