Abstract

We perform a pilot trial of highly convenient taper fabrication for polymer optical fibers (POFs) using hot water. A ~380-mm-long POF taper is successfully fabricated, and its ∼150-mm-long waist has a uniform outer diameter of ∼ 230 μm. The shape is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The optical loss dependence on the strain applied to the waist shows an interesting behavior containing three regimes, the origins of which are inferred by microscopic observations. We then discuss the controllability of the taper length.
