Granular modeling simulator for powder compaction processes

Abstract

Granular modeling has been proposed and developed to describe the mechanical behaviors both in compaction and consolidation and to predict the structures of green compact in the powder forming. In the present study, materials design oriented system will be introduced to deal with various aspect of mechanical and metallurgical behaviors: 1) preprocessors to yield the adaptive initial discrete elements to the prescribed powder materials, 2) solver to simulate the actual powder processings and 3) postprocessor to provide mechanical information or state variables and to reconsider the constitutive relations in powder materials. In the present paper, outline of our developing system will be stated with comments on each processor function. For numerical example is taken the steel powder compaction to simulate typical powder behavior, fluid pattern and density around the corner of dies and punches for comparison with experiments.
