Abstract

Selective scission of nucleic acids have been one of the most challenging topics and many artificial nucleases were discussed and reported. This paper aims to show that lanthanide metal ions efficiently cleave plasmid supercoiled DNA. Catalysis by these ions is applicable to the hydrolysis of both single-stranded and double-stranded linear DNAs. Results show that lanthanide metal ions especially Ce3+, hydrolyze DNA oligomers under mild conditions and findings strongly indicate high potentialities of the metal ions as the catalytic centers of hydrolytic artificial nucleases.
