Lateral strength of embedded SHS column base reinforced with U-shaped rebars

Abstract

This paper describes experimental and analytical studies on lateral strength of embedded SHS column bases reinforced with U-shaped rebars. Sub-assemblage tests were carried out to investigate the influence of embedment length and details of U-shaped rebars. Experiments showed that the U-shaped rebars yielded or remained elastic. Calculation of the axial force of the U-shaped rebars based on the anchorage strength, well explained the experimental results. The ultimate strength of the embedded column bases calculated using the anchorage strength evaluates the experimental value in general to the safe side.
