Abstract

YbBa2Cu3O7-x (Yb123) bulk superconductors were prepared by a melt growth process under various oxygen partial pressures. The microstructure of melt-processed Yb123 was observed by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. Tc and critical current density (Jc) were measured with a SQUID magnetometer. The size of Yb2BaCuO5 particles in the YbBa2Cu3O7-x phase was about 1 to 10 μm. The melt processed Yb123 sample showed Tconset of 91.5 K and Jc of 50,000 A/cm2 at 77 K and 0 T.
