Rapid and efficient extraction of inert platinum group metals from HNO3(aq) at elevated temperature

Abstract

The extractions of inert platinum group metals (PGMs) like Ru(III) and Rh(III) are always slow kinetics and efficiency. This research investigated the extraction behaviors of Ru(III) and Rh(III) in HNO3(aq)/1-octanol system with a pyridinediamide. Extraction kinetics of Ru(III) was accelerated by improving temperature, while not efficiency. After adding a hydrophobic anion like Tf2N, extractability of Ru(III) extraction was promoted to 95% within 3 h at 356 K. More inert PGM like Rh(III) showed similar extraction behavior with Ru(III). Rh(III) extraction was enhanced to 90% within 2 h at 356 K with Tf2N. A rapid and efficient extraction of inert PGMs was demonstrated from HNO3(aq)/1-octanol.
