Strip-loaded waveguide optical isolator employing nonreciprocal guided-radiation mode conversion

Abstract

An optical isolator employing a nonreciprocal guided-radiation mode conversion has been investigated. The optical isolator is comprised of a strip-loaded magneto-optic waveguide. Only backward-traveling TM modes can couple to TE radiation modes so that the device acts as a TM-mode optical isolator. Fabrication tolerance of waveguide parameters are discussed for a striploaded magneto-optic waveguide optical isolator and a rib waveguide optical isolator.
