    Abstract

We selected a Half Toroidal CVT which has low spin of the traction contact area and tried to apply it to the motorcycle automatic transmissions. The contact area in a big traction drive is an ellipse of about 10mm2, and the maximum Hertz pressure is about 3.0GPa. The traction fluids pass through the zone in about 2.0×10-5 sec. So the performance of traction drive depends to a large extent on the rheological properties of the fluid in the Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication contact. It's life, efficiency and drivability were also tested and good test results were obtained in all test conditions. These motorcycles were tested on a High Way and their drivabilities proved very satisfactory.
