Verification of airflow control methods according to individual differences in the development of combined convection-radiation air conditioning system

Abstract

We developed a combined convection-radiation air conditioning system with the thermo active building system (TABS) and conducted an experiment to verify appropriate control methods. Subjects were given simulation tasks of low to high metabolic rate, and were exposed to an airflow environment. The causes of individual differences were discussed in comparison with thermal manikin exposed in the same environment. The increase in metabolic rate increased the reports of “hot and uncomfortable” feelings, and reports of comfort increased with increasing airflow. Heat dissipation can be effectively promoted if the state of perspiration is moderate in a high metabolic rate state, and comfort is maintained. Some male subjects showed a tendency similar to that of thermal manikin, suggesting the possibility of predicting physiological quantities from equivalent temperature and skin surface temperature. This study can provide useful data to consider control methods for individual characteristics.
