Optical time domain reflectometers (OTDR) operating at 1.6-μm-band are a very important diagnostic tools for maintaining optical fiber transmission lines. One approach to extending the dynamic range of an OTDR is to use fiber amplifiers or lasers. In this paper we report a 1.6-μm band OTDR with high performance which is based on a Raman fiber laser pumped by a Q-switched Er3 doped fiber ring laser.
