N2 - Students' understanding of structural mechanics was measured by the final exam results from their structural mechanics class. Additionally, the relationship between their learning experiences in high school and their approach to building wooden truss bridges in the contest was analyzed. The results were as follows: 1) a student's understanding is strongly correlated with which science courses they chose to take during high school; and 2) students may find a truss bridge strength contest interesting, but it does not help further their understanding of structural mechanics.
