Application of liquid crystals to slide-ring gels

The slide-ring gels formed by crosslinking of polyrotaxane (PR) have sliding crosslinks, and show good properties in tensibility and strength. On the other hand, liquid crystalline gels are hybrid materials having both properties of gels and liquid crystals. In this study, biphenyl-substituted polyrotaxane was synthesized in order to make liquid crystalline slide-ring gels. The results of NMR spectrum showed biphenyls were introduced to α-CDs of PR. These modified PRs gelated by crosslinking in dimethyl sulfoxide.
