The rear-end collision avoidance system (RCAS) has been developed as a system for the Advanced Safety Vehicle (ASV), a project of the Japan Ministry of Transport. It has three functions as follows: it issues distance headway warnings, performs automatic breaking in case of emergency, and issues warnings to vehicles approaching rapidly from behind. An outline of the RCAS is presented and its collision avoidance experiments results are described.
