N2 - This study presents an algorithm to estimate the background opticalproperties for quantitative imaging, based on the initial pressure distributionobtained from photoacoustic tomography (PAT). The algorithm utilizes analternative illumination mode of our original PAT system, which separatelyilluminates tissue from forward and backward directions toward an arraytransducer. The optical properties are determined by minimizing the differencebetween the following two ratios: one is the ratio of initial pressuredistribution obtained from the illumination modes, the other is the ratio of thecalculated light fluence distribution. We show that the algorithm estimates thebackground optical properties even if the initial pressure distribution isreconstructed under the limited-view conditions.
