Mori and Satos group has found that nearly perfect shape memory effect (SME) is attainable in a single crystalline Fe-30Mn-1Si alloy. The further research revealed that complete shape memory is even obtainable in polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Si alloys if they contain a significant amount of Si. Effect of Si on the SME for polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Si alloys is investigated in this study. Beneficial effect of Si on the shape memory effect for Fe-Mn alloys is threefold. First it reduces the Neel temperature of austenite and diminishes the stability of austenite. Second it enhances the strength of matrix, which inhibits the intrusion of permanent slip during memory inducing deformation. Third it reduces the stacking fault energy of austenite and promotes the formation of martensite.
