Among the calls handled in an ATM network, video transmission takes a large bandwidth. In addition, since the traffic is bursty, an efficient traffic control technique is desired. The variable bit rate transmission control method studied to date has a high efficiency but suffers from the problem that the video quality on the receiving side is significantly degraded if there is cell loss. In this paper, for real-time video information, a system for information transmission without causing cell loss, using the fast bandwidth reservation protocol of the ATM network, is proposed. In the system, when the video frame to be transmitted generates burst traffic, this traffic is detected at the transmission end before-hand and a request to temporarily extend the bandwidth of the call is generated for the switch. If the request is not granted, the transmission of the burst traffic is in effect delayed by a new control operation called picture replacing which allows reduction of video quality. In this paper, the proposed system is evaluated from the point of view of transmission efficiency and degree of video quality degradation. The results are compared with fixed rate transmission systems.
