The remarkable effect of the additive salts on electrochemical characteristics of neutral carrier based poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrodes was investigated. In this paper, in order to eliminate the effect of the ionic sites of PVC on the response of neutral carrier based PVC membrane electrodes with various kinds of additive salts, the response of neutral carrier based liquid membrane with additive salts was examined systematically using an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET). We concluded that the effect of additive salts is caused by competitive reactions of complexation and ion-exchange occurring at the liquid-liquid interface of sensing liquid membranes from the results of a neutral carrier based liquid-membrane ISFET.
