Formation of superconductors by YAG laser irradiation of laminated thin layers

An Nb tape was coated with a C layer of controlled thickness (5-10 μm) by magnetron sputtering. A YAG laser irradiated the tape in argon atmosphere. The beam power was 10-100 W, depending on the velocity of the tape, and the diameter of the beam was a few hundred microns. The resultant NbC tape showed superconductivity around 10 K. The same reaction conditions were used in a nitrogen atmosphere. Superconductivity in these tapes was found to start above 15 K. In the process for Nb3Al tapes an Nb tape was first coated with Al and then with C. The irradiation was performed under nearly the same reaction conditions as those for NbC. Superconductivity was found around 14 K, which is somewhat lower than values reported previously. This was attributed to an excess of C in the surface interstitially dissolved in the Nb3Al structure. In all cases phase identification and microstructure observation were carried out by X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.
