This paper presents an analysis and investigation of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and signal pulse near an optical ring circuit consisting of a frequency shifter, erbium-doped fiber amplifier, and a narrow bandpass filter (BPF), using numerical simulation. The relationship between BPF bandwidth and frequency translation limit, polarization state and initial signal frequency deviation from the BPF center is explained. A frequency translation greater than 100 GHz is estimated and is consistent with experimental observations.
