Gas nitriding of magnesium-titanium alloys fabricated by bulk mechanical alloying

抄録

Mg-Ti alloys and pure Mg were successfully gas nitrided at 723 K for 129.6 ks under 0.1 MPa N2. Ti was selected as alloying element due to its high nitrogen affinity. Fine Ti particles in 10 μm range were homogeneously distributed in the alloys. Bulk Mechanical Alloying process was used to produce the sample having activated state of Mg, providing high diffusion path for nitrogen. Mg2N2 produced is not stable and reacts with moisture, resulting in fine powders of Mg(OH)2 on the surface and NH3(g) as by product.
