Growth of Red Tide Phytoplankton Using Glass Powder Containing Nutrients -Technical Note-

The growth of five species of red tide phytoplankton (Heterosigma akashiwo, Chetoceros debile, Skeletonema costatum, Chattonella antique (Hada) Ono, and Thalassiosira weissflogii) in batch cultures using glass powders containing FeO, Fe2O3, SiO2, Na2O, K2O, P2O5, GeO2, and/or B2O3 was investigated. In general, the growth of the phytoplankton increased with the addition of glass containing Fe and/or P. However, in competitive cultures of S. costatum or C. debile and C. antiqua using growth material A (containing P and Fe) or SBF-11 (containing Fe), S. costatum and C. debile grew, but C. antiqua did not. Also, Bacillariophyceae did not grow with the addition of the glass powder containing germanium.
