The present paper describes experimental and computer simulation results for 30 kWh scale horizontal U-tube type latent thermal-energy storage units using a eutectic of sodium hydroxide-sodium nitrate as a phase change material. Through 1000 melting/freezing (charge/discharge) cycle tests on two storage units of bare-tube and finned-tube types, the heat-transfer characteristics were evaluated. Computer simulations on both the storage units were performed with a two-dimensional model. In the case of the finned-tube type, the effect of fins was included in the effective thermal conductivity of molten salt around the tubes. The calculated results were in good agreement with the observed ones. The model was also applied to practical-scale storage units, and the influence of the parameters, such as the ratio of the diameter to the length of the storage vessel, the number of heat-transfer pipes and channel partitions, etc., on the heat-transfer performance was evaluated.
