Fe-Mn-Si alloys exhibit a very good shape memory effect (SME) if a suitable combination of Mn and Si concentration is selected. But the maximum recoverable strain is only 2% in tension. Larger strain need be recoverable for practical application. In this study we show that the recoverable strain can be increased by mechanical and heat treatments. Shape memory effect of Fe-Mn-Si alloys can be improved by prestrain at temperatures where no martensitic transformation occurs. The SME can be further improved by a combination of prestrain and heat treatment.
