Fundamental research on latent thermal storage for space energy applications is presented. Materials studies for this objective are described, and advanced concepts for thermal storage in a solar receiver are considered. Particular emphasis is placed on the phase change behavior of containerized material, which is one of the most critical problems not only for the solar receiver but also in the solar dynamic power system itself. To obtain experimental information on this subject, a solidification experiment under microgravity using a trajectory flight sounding rocket has been designed. The short-period experiment is described in detail.
