We proposed a linear vernier machine with permanent magnets on armature side only. In this machine, the armature winding and permanent magnets are located on the mover; therefore, the stator is composed only of an iron core with small teeth. This feature contributes greatly to low-cost linear machine system for long distance application. However, higher force densities will likely be required to improve the scope of this machine's applicability. For this reason, we investigated the permanent magnet arrangement and achieved an improvement in the force density of 68% in evaluations through the finite element analysis. This paper presents the details of the investigations.
