Mechanical and thermal characteristics in cold rolling have been evaluated as the first step of a lubrication study. Pressure distribution was calculated using the theory of differential work-roll. Based on the computed results, the applicability of the equation of a practical friction coefficient μ=τ/(R·P) was made clear. With respect to the temperature rise of the strip and roll surface, the measured data was in good agreement with the calculated results in the absence of heat transfer between roll and strip. Multi-thermocouple method was developed to investigate the temperature distribution in the roll. With the aid of boundary element method, the sensor could provide reliable estimation of temperature rise at the interface between roll and strip.
