In optical-fiber connectors, Fresnel-reflection occurs as a result of the gap between two fiber surfaces and the refractive index change of the polished fiber surface. This contributes to unstable laser-diode oscillation. Filling of the gap with optimal matching-material, theoretically chosen to minimize the reflected light power in visible wavelength, was experimentally demonstrated to result in a reflection loss of greater than 40 db in 0. 85-1. 3 mu m wavelength. It was found that CeO//2 is suitable for polishing the fiber surface. Field tests showed that these methods are satisfactory in terms of their practicality.
