The present paper discusses the operation of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system with a multivariable control scheme through dynamic simulation. The SOFC power output, operating temperature, fuel utilization factor and steam-to-carbon ratio (S/C) were employed as the controlled variables. The current density, air, fuel and steam flow rates were chosen for use in the SOFC control. Feedback control methodology was adopted to achieve adequate operation of the SOFC The results from the conducted simulation show the capability of the multivariable control of SOFC operation. The temperature control scheme requires strict limitations on the air flow rate manipulation and the flexible adjustment of the reference value to system power output.
