N2 - We have studied the pinning characteristics of melt-processed Yb-Ba-Cu-O, in which Yb2BaCuO5 (Yb211) particles are dispersed in the YbBa2Cu3O7 (Yb123) matrix. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition (Tc) with an onset value of 88.5 K. In spite of its low Tc in the RE123 families (RE=rare earth elements), the sample showed a large shielding current density of 5.5 × 108 A/m2 at 77 K and 0 T, which is comparable to those of melt-processed Y-Ba-Cu-O and OCMG-processed Nd-Ba-Cu-O. Analyses reveal that the dominant pinning center of melt-processed Yb-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors is Yb211 inclusions.
