The extractions of inert platinum group metals (PGMs) like Ru(III) and Rh(III) are always slow kinetics and efficiency. This research investigated the extraction behaviors of Ru(III) and Rh(III) in HNO3(aq)/1-octanol system with a pyridinediamide. Extraction kinetics of Ru(III) was accelerated by improving temperature, while not efficiency. After adding a hydrophobic anion like Tf2N−, extractability of Ru(III) extraction was promoted to 95% within 3 h at 356 K. More inert PGM like Rh(III) showed similar extraction behavior with Ru(III). Rh(III) extraction was enhanced to 90% within 2 h at 356 K with Tf2N−. A rapid and efficient extraction of inert PGMs was demonstrated from HNO3(aq)/1-octanol.
