Refinement of Nd4Ba2Cu2O10 particle in the superconducting matrix

We have investigated the effect of oxygen partial pressure, initial composition and CeO2 addition on the coarsening of Nd4Ba2Cu2O10 (Nd422) in a Ba-Cu-O melt. It was found that the size of Nd422 decreased in the liquid when the initial composition was shifted toward Ba-rich direction. Reduction of the partial pressure of oxygen and addition of CeO2 were also found to be effective for the refinement of Nd422. Fine dispersion of Nd422 led to an enhancement of the critical current density (Jc) in a low field region for melt-textured Nd-Ba-Cu-O.
