Superconducting properties of (Gd, Nd)-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductor fabricated by melt processing in air

Superconducting properties of melt-textured (Gd, Nd)-Ba-Cu-O have been studied. Bulk samples were fabricated from precursors of Gd123-Nd422 with Ag2O, Pt and CeO2 in air. Ba-rich Nd422ss (Nd3.6Ba2.4Cu1.8O10-δ) was also used as a starting material. The onset Tc for the bulk sample with stoichiometric Nd422 was only about 80 K. The employment of Ba-rich Nd422ss instead of Nd422 enabled the formation of the high-Tc phase even by melt-texturing in air. Lattice parameters for the 123 phase suggested that the sample with stoichiometric Nd422 formed a LRE1+xBa2-xCu3Oy-type low-Tc solid solution, while the LRE-Ba substitution was suppressed in the sample with Ba-rich Nd422ss. The Jc-B curve for the sample with Ba-rich Nd422ss exhibited a secondary peak effect in about 1 T and 77 K, and the Jc value was larger than that of Gd-Ba-Cu-O bulk prepared in air.
