The synthesis of sliding graft copolymers and temperature-responsive behavior

We studied temperature responsive behavior of the sliding graft copolymers (SGC) having sliding linear molecules as side chains grafted to the cyclodextrins (CDs) of polyrotaxane (PR). These SGCs would show a wide variety of high-order structures due to their movable side chains. We synthesized the SGCs with alkyl oligoethylene glycols (CnEm) grafted to CDs and investigated their structural and conformational behavior in dilute solution under various conditions. For the aqueous solution of C2E2-g-PR, aggregation was observed around 40 °C by DSC and DLS. Moreover, the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) results showed unique characteristic of gradual growth of aggregation up to 70 °C.
