The level of automation is high for LiDAR, whilst automated 3D mapping by photogrammetry is not really successful. On the other hand, the level of detail present in LiDAR height sets is low, whilst images provide a wealth of detail. Their integration may thus improve the level of automation whilst preserving the level of detail necessary for urban areas. The authors examine the possibilities of integrating Three Line Scanner (TLS) images with LiDAR data for automated 3D building extraction. Basic shapes of buildings can be generated fully automatically but the success rate is lower for complex buildings.
